‘Shrooms!

by | Feb 9, 2011

Sometimes a bolt of inspiration comes out of left-field. A couple of months ago, I saw a few gorgeous images of mushrooms that someone made (I didn’t catch the photographer’s name or I would mention it here) while browsing the web, and the images kind of stuck in my mind. Slowly it began to dawn on me that during my travels while photographing nature, I’ve seen tons of beautiful mushrooms – even commented on with companions – and never bothered to stop and see them with a photographer’s eye.  HUGE mistake – and my loss! We’ve had a lot of bad weather here in Tallahassee this past week, and I took advantage of a break in the rain to take a stroll in a nearby forest specifically to look for mushrooms.

Fuzzy Foot (Xeromphalina campanella)

This fuzzy foot mushroom was found on one of the many fallen/rotting logs that are found near the Lake Jackson Indian Mounds in Tallahassee, just north of Interstate 10. I had a difficult time finding the correct identification for this one (at least I think I did – 98% sure).

Pear-Shaped Puffball (Lycoperdon pyriforme)

SEE MORE MUSHROOMS & OTHER FUNGI

This puffball mushroom is very common and I see them all over the state. This is just an example of  the beauty that I’ve been walking past so frequently while looking for “the big picture”. Sometimes the beauty really is in the details! I am currently working on a major new nature photography website that will have a lot more subjects and material than our popular Florida Nature Photography website, and will encompass the nature outside of my native Florida including mushroom images such as – and including – these. Stay tuned!

THANKS FOR LOOKING AND WE LOVE HEARING ALL YOUR COMMENTS!!!
