A Quiet Winter Wilderness in Washington State

by | Feb 3, 2015

I recently took off for a few days out in the wide, wild  wilderness between the Cascade Mountains and Rocky Mountains…. here’s a sample of what I brought home. Click any image to enlarge.

Silent Forest in Winter

Silent Forest in Winter

A gorgeous winter day on Mount Spokane in Eastern Washington in late January. The forest is quiet, the drifts are deep, and the western hemlocks are frosted with fresh snow.

Rocky Mountain Elk - Bull and Harem

Rocky Mountain Elk – Bull and Harem

A herd of Rocky Mountain elk rest in the sagebrush desert on a sunny winter day east of Mount Rainier near the Tieton River in Washington State. The large antlered bull stands guard as his harem of females relax and get some rest.

House Finches and Hoar Frost

 House Finches and Hoar Frost

A group of house finches perch in a frozen bitterbrush bush in Central Washington on a bitterly cold winter morning. The males’ bright red breast and eyebrow plumage stands out in wonderful contrast against the white sky.
