This male black-tailed gnatcatcher and his mate weren’t very happy when I peered out of my tent in the bright Sonoran Desert morning in the Ajo Mountains of Southern Arizona’s Pima County. I was scolded almost the entire time as I packed up my camera equipment and gear, but not until I got this shot of him before I left!

Native to the deserts of the American Southwest and northern Mexico, these tiny, noisy relatives of the wrens are at completely at home in the driest of deserts where they make their living among the mesquite and cacti and feeding on spiders and insects.
